State in Society: Studying How States and Societies Transform and Constitute One Another (Cambridge Studies in Comparative Politics)

State in Society: Studying How States and Societies Transform and Constitute One Another (Cambridge Studies in Comparative Politics)by Joel S. MigdalCambridge University Press

The essays in this book trace the development of Joel Migdal's "state-in-society" approach. The essays situate the approach within the classic literature in political science, sociology, and related disciplines but present a new model for understanding state-society relations. It allies parts of the state and groups in society against other such coalitions, determines how societies and states create and maintain distinct ways of structuring day-to-day life, the nature of the rules that govern people's behavior, whom they benefit and whom they disadvantage, which sorts of elements unite people and which divide them, and what shared meaning people hold about their relations with others and their place in the world.

What constitutes happiness? Self-perceived quality of life scale: Theoretical framework and development

What constitutes happiness? Self-perceived quality of life scale: Theoretical framework and developmentby Ph.D. Ephraim C. TrakhtenbergVDM Verlag Dr. Müller

The meaning of "a good life" may vary from culture to culture and from individual to individual, but it revolves around the same aspects of life across cultures. Understanding what constitutes and influences a good life has a significant value for all people. During the past decades researchers investigated the concept of "the good life" from three perspectives: quality of life, subjective well-being, and individual's level of functionality. This book describes development of an empirical, psychological theory which integrates previous approaches to understanding the concept of "the good life". A multi-faceted, computer-based scale was devised for measuring the construct on three indices: subjective well-being, affective experiences, and fulfillment of needs. The scale has robust psychometric properties. The results of the research revealed the underlying, hierarchical structure of what constitutes "a good life" or happiness. This book is an excellent guide for understanding what constitutes and influences happiness, and could help a reader live life happier. A comprehensive report of individual's quality of life and overall happiness could be obtained at www.life-scale.org.

Racial Profiling: Eliminating the Confusion Between Racial and Criminal Profiling and Clarifying What Constitutes Unfair Discrimination

Racial Profiling: Eliminating the Confusion Between Racial and Criminal Profiling and Clarifying What Constitutes Unfair Discriminationby Darin D. FredricksonCharles C Thomas Pub Ltd

This book was written to eliminate confusion regarding what has come to be called racial profiling by clarifying the legitimate law enforcement practice of criminal profiling, and by clarifying what constitutes unfair discrimination, and persecution. This book was written to benefit sociology students, law enforcement officers, and anyone else in a position to be concerned with, or affected by, the profiling issue. Police administrators, judges, and legislators, must adequately understand the topics and their many ramifications if they are to make decisions that are based on fact rather than stereotype and myth, and free from the influence of adverse social and political pressures. And, attorneys, when prosecuting or defending cases wherein profiling and discrimination is an issue must have good insight into the many interrelated dynamics of the topics to properly prepare and argue their case. This writing explores difficult social issues that are often poorly understood, but issues that need to be understood if solutions are to be meaningful. And, a poorly conceived solution is especially likely when the issues are both complex and controversial. In this book, the writers acknowledge that while criminal profiling is a necessary and legitimate law enforcement practice, unchecked bias can pollute the practice. And, while they acknowledge that measures to detect those whose enforcement practices reflect bias can have merit, they emphasize that such efforts must be in addition to the hiring of high caliber officers, providing quality training, providing competent leadership, and on a properly staffed and trained Internal Affairs department. But, the authors also emphasize the unfortunate fact that many efforts intended to prevent bias are to varying degrees ineffectual and create collateral problems. Germane to that discussion is illumination of the difficulties of monitoring fair treatment policies, and the unintended problems that often accompany consent decrees.

To Constitute a Nation: A Cultural History of Australia's Constitution (Studies in Australian History)

To Constitute a Nation: A Cultural History of Australia's Constitution (Studies in Australian History)by Helen IrvingCambridge University Press

This imaginative and resonant book looks at the constitution as a cultural artifact. Irving looks beyond the well-known events, places and figures to locate federation and the constitution in the context of broader social, political and cultural changes. Despite its paradoxical construction, there is something uniquely Australian about the constitution, and it marked a utopian moment as the old century gave way to the new. Irving analyzes the background and outcomes of the recent Constitutional Convention and considers its significance for Australia's future. A new chapter covers the development of the constitution in the twentieth century.
